Why Sicily

The destination that gives a programme cultural depth, not just sun.

Sicily is the destination companies choose when the brief calls for cultural depth as well as sea light: an incentive programme for top performers that needs to feel substantial, a customer programme that introduces senior international guests to a layered, historic part of Italy, a leadership offsite where the agenda benefits from a real change of context. Greek temples, Norman cathedrals, Arab-Norman quarters, baroque palazzi and a food culture entirely its own combine into a programme texture few destinations can match.

Operationally, Sicily has matured into a serious corporate destination across the past decade. The Belmond, Four Seasons, Verdura, Mandarin Oriental and Rocco Forte properties now anchor the high end of the inventory; Catania and Palermo airports together connect the island reliably to the major European hubs; and the road and helicopter infrastructure between the eastern coast, the south-east and the western coast is robust enough to support multi-stop programmes.

Sicily works best for programmes of four to six nights where the company is willing to use the island as part of the agenda — not as a backdrop, but as the source of the experience itself.

Our Approach

Why companies choose The Italian Chapter.

Sicilian programmes are won on local knowledge. The supplier base is wider than Puglia's but more fragmented, and the gap between a generic island programme and a genuinely Sicilian one is significant. We design and operate every programme end-to-end with the island's hoteliers, fishermen, winemakers, ceramic ateliers and cultural institutions.

Hotel and palazzo sourcing on the ground

We have stayed in every property we recommend. Shortlists are matched to the brief — exclusive use, meeting infrastructure, coastal access — and contracted directly with the general manager.

Cultural and culinary network

Working relationships with archaeological sites, Etna winemakers, baroque palazzi and Aeolian fishing communities open programmes that read as authentic to the island.

Single point of contact

One project manager owns the brief, the run sheet and every supplier across the cohort's entire stay.

Multi-stop logistics

Programmes that move between Taormina, Siracusa, the Aeolian Islands or the western coast are sequenced through helicopter, ferry and private road transfers with named owners at every transition.

Etna as a planned variable

Volcanic activity is a routine operational consideration. We contract programmes around Etna with parallel itineraries and named decision owners for re-routing.

Discretion at executive level

Bookings sit under a project name. Front-of-house and supplier teams are briefed before arrival on which names are public and which are not.

Where We Host

Coastal resorts, historic palazzi and island retreats.

Five-star coastal resorts. The grand houses along the eastern and southern coasts — in Taormina, on the Catania coast, near Noto and on the south-west — handle senior international corporate audiences as their primary clientele. We contract directly with the general managers, which secures meeting infrastructure, beach club exclusivity and dinner venues that sit outside published inventory.

Historic palazzi and dimore storiche. The baroque palazzi of Noto, Modica, Ragusa and Palermo open for private corporate dinners and receptions. Held under the project name, often with the family's own staff and a Sicilian chef brought in for the evening.

Aeolian and Egadi island retreats. For smaller leadership groups, exclusive-use villas and intimate hotels on Salina, Panarea and Favignana offer settings that feel genuinely removed from the mainland — best as a 2–3 night chapter inside a longer Sicilian programme.

Signature Experiences

Experiences native to the island.

The strongest Sicilian programmes are built around a small number of moments that the island delivers better than anywhere else. Two or three of these carry an entire incentive or leadership retreat.

Etna winery dinners with the winemaker. An evening at a working winery on the slopes of Etna — Carricante and Nerello Mascalese from the producer's own vineyards, dinner cooked in the volcanic kitchen. A serious, authentic moment with no theatre around it.

Out-of-hours visits to the Valley of the Temples. A private evening visit to the Greek temples at Agrigento outside public hours, with a senior archaeologist leading. A short, contained cultural moment that anchors a programme on the southern coast.

Private gozzi excursions in the Aeolians. A day on traditional Sicilian fishing boats around Salina, Panarea or the coast off Taormina — swimming stops at sea caves, lunch on board prepared by the boat's own kitchen.

Tuna and street-food experiences in Palermo. A morning at the Capo or Vucciria markets with a chef, followed by a hands-on cooking session — the most reliable way to introduce the island's food culture to an international cohort.

Noto baroque palazzo dinners. An evening inside a privately owned baroque palazzo in Noto, with the family hosting and a starred Sicilian chef cooking. One of the most distinctive dining moments available in southern Italy.

Sample Programme

A five-night incentive programme on the east coast.

Each Sicilian programme is built around the company, the cohort and the part of the island that matches the brief. The outline below illustrates a five-night incentive for eighty top performers based on the east coast with a one-night Etna chapter.

Day One — Arrival

A warm welcome on the coast.

  • Afternoon. Wave-sequenced private transfers from Catania; named drivers airside, helicopter from Catania for senior principals.
  • Late afternoon. Check-in at an exclusive-use coastal resort; unstructured time on the beach and pool.
  • 7:30 pm. Opening aperitivo on the cliff terrace with an Etna rosé and Sicilian small plates.
  • 9:00 pm. Private beach-club dinner, the cohort settling into the destination.

Day Two — Sea & Baroque

A morning on the water, an evening in Noto.

  • 9:30 am. Private yacht charter along the Taormina coast — Isola Bella, sea caves and swim stops in protected coves.
  • 1:30 pm. Long lunch on board at anchor, fresh-caught crudo and a chilled Sicilian white.
  • 5:00 pm. Return to the resort; spa and unstructured time before the evening transfer.
  • 8:00 pm. Private historian-led walk through baroque Noto after the streets empty, ending with dinner inside a family-owned palazzo on the main corso.

Day Three — Etna chapter

A one-night move to the volcano.

  • 10:00 am. Transfer to the slopes of Mount Etna; exclusive wine tasting at a boutique winery on volcanic soils with the winemaker hosting.
  • 1:30 pm. Farm-to-table lunch among the vines, indigenous reds paired with the cellar's own production.
  • 4:00 pm. Guided walk on the lava fields with a volcanologist — recent flows, summit craters in view.
  • 8:30 pm. Awards dinner inside a historic barrel cellar, a Michelin-starred Sicilian chef brought to the property for the night.

Day Four — Working day

The agenda's centre of gravity.

  • Morning. Return to the coastal resort by mid-morning; coffee and reset on the terrace.
  • 11:00 am. Three-hour leadership and strategy session on the resort's private floor, full AV and controlled access.
  • 1:30 pm. Working lunch in a reserved dining room; coworking space available for breakouts.
  • Late afternoon. Spa, pool, unstructured time genuinely free.
  • 9:00 pm. Private dinner on the resort's seafront terrace with a Michelin-starred Sicilian chef and traditional musicians closing the evening.

Day Five — Closing

A short morning, an unhurried close.

  • 8:30 am. Out-of-hours private visit to Taormina's Greek theatre with an archaeologist, before the gates open to the public.
  • 12:30 pm. Closing brunch at a Michelin-level coastal kitchen, partners welcome to join.
  • From 3:00 pm. Coordinated private transfers to Catania, sequenced backwards from each flight.

Frequently Asked Questions

Planning a corporate retreat in Sicily.

  • Sicily offers a programme depth the other two cannot match. The island's cultural layers — Greek, Roman, Arab, Norman, baroque — create a programme texture that gives senior international audiences a genuine sense of having travelled somewhere significant. For incentives where the objective is recognition through experience, and for customer programmes where the substance of the destination matters, Sicily consistently outperforms more familiar southern Italian options.

  • Twenty to one hundred and fifty guests is the working range. Smaller leadership groups take an exclusive-use villa or a small Aeolian property. Mid-size incentives of 60–100 are well served by the grand coastal resorts under exclusivity. Above 100, the high-end inventory is concentrated in a small number of properties — early lead time is essential.

  • Mid-May to late June and the first three weeks of September are the strongest windows: hot enough for sea time, mild enough for outdoor dinners and cultural visits, and outside the August leisure peak. Late September and early October work well for incentive programmes. We generally avoid July and August for senior corporate audiences.

  • Yes, but it requires deliberate planning. Catania and Palermo are 2.5–3 hours by road; the Aeolians require ferry or helicopter transfer; Etna adds a separate operational variable. We design multi-stop programmes around named transition owners, contingency timing and confirmed weather decision points — not around aspirational itineraries.

  • Volcanic activity is a routine planning variable, not a surprise. Programmes including Etna are contracted with a parallel itinerary that engages if access is restricted — typically a substitute cultural day in Catania or a winery visit at a lower altitude. The decision is made by named owners on a defined timeline, not improvised.

  • For May, June and September, confirm the host property 9–12 months ahead. The high-end exclusive-use options on the eastern coast and in the Aeolians typically book 12–18 months out. Shoulder dates in late October are usually deliverable in 4–6 months.
