Why Lake Como

The most efficient prestige destination in Europe.

Three qualities rarely come together in a single destination: a short transfer from a major hub airport, a contained operating perimeter, and a venue inventory accustomed to senior corporate guests. Lake Como is one of the few places in Europe that holds all three.

The central basin — Cernobbio, Moltrasio, Tremezzo, Bellagio, Varenna — is small enough that an entire group can move between three venues in a single evening without losing rhythm, and large enough that the company can be the only private group in a property on a given night. The grand hotels and historic villas on this stretch are operated by teams that handle board-level groups regularly; they know how to host without intruding.

For executive offsites, leadership retreats and incentive programmes, the arrival itself signals that the meeting matters. The agenda then has the space to be the agenda — not the destination's competition.

Our Approach

Why companies choose The Italian Chapter.

International companies planning a retreat in Italy face a choice: manage dozens of suppliers directly, or work with a partner who controls the destination end-to-end. Our clients choose the second approach because the cost of a poorly coordinated programme — in time, reputation and the experience of their senior people — is always greater than the cost of engaging the right partner from the outset.

One point of contact

A single project manager owns the brief, the run sheet and every supplier. The client's internal organiser arrives as a guest, not as a producer.

Direct supplier access

The best villas, boat operators, Michelin kitchens and private estates on Lake Como are not available through public channels. Long-standing relationships give our clients priority, availability and discretion that cannot be bought at short notice.

Tailored venue sourcing

Every property we recommend has been walked, tested against the specific brief, and negotiated with the general manager before it reaches the client. The shortlist is rarely longer than three.

Operational planning

Every movement is sequenced to the minute, with named owners and parallel weather, transport and medical contingency plans contracted before the first guest arrives.

Executive-level service

The teams we place on the ground understand the expectations of board-level guests — discretion around named principals, real-time programme adjustments, nothing left to chance.

Budget optimisation

We negotiate directly with venues and suppliers and design the budget around the outcomes the company wants to achieve, removing the line items that add cost without adding value.

Where We Host

Luxury hotels and private villas.

Grand hotels. The historic five-star houses around Cernobbio, Tremezzo and Bellagio are the natural choice when the brief calls for ceremonial weight, full-service meeting infrastructure, or a board dinner staged on a private terrace above the water. We contract directly with the general managers, which allows us to negotiate exclusivity zones and hold dates outside published inventory.

Private villas. For executive committees and board-level groups, a private villa buy-out is often the format that produces the most cohesive retreat. The entire property — house, grounds, jetty, staff, kitchen, boat — is held for one group, which removes almost every variable that creates friction in a hotel-based programme.

Several of the villas in our portfolio are not publicly listed and are accessible only through relationships we maintain with the owning families and estate managers. Typical capacity ranges from 14 to 30 guests in en-suite bedrooms, with resident chef, dedicated events team and private boat from the property's jetty.

Signature Experiences

Two or three moments worth building the programme around.

The most memorable Lake Como retreats are not the ones with the longest activity schedule. They are the ones where two or three carefully chosen experiences sit between long meals and unstructured time on the water.

Choreographed Riva fleet cruises. A coordinated arrival of four or five mahogany Rivas crossing the central basin — without fail the most photographed moment of the retreat. The loading sequence is choreographed so the group arrives together rather than in a queue.

Private garden visits. Villa del Balbianello and Villa Carlotta open outside public hours for corporate groups, often with the curator leading the visit — a working break that feels like a privilege rather than a programmed activity.

Michelin dining, on the water and on site. Off-site dinners reached by boat at dusk; or a Michelin-starred chef brought to the host villa to cook a tasting menu on the terrace. The lake holds one of the highest concentrations of starred restaurants in Italy, which gives the dining programme real range across a three- or four-day stay.

Private kitchen and wellness sessions. Hands-on cooking inside the kitchens of historic villas; sunrise yoga on a private terrace; open-water swimming with a guide. Well suited to long-haul leadership teams where the first morning needs to be restorative rather than directive.

Sample Programme

A three-day executive retreat.

Every programme is built around the company, the agenda and the people attending. The outline below illustrates how a three-day executive offsite for roughly thirty senior leaders might be structured on the central lake.

Day One — Arrival

A controlled welcome.

  • Late morning. Wave-sequenced private transfers from Milan Malpensa and Linate, named drivers airside.
  • 1:30 pm. Lakeside welcome lunch on the hotel terrace with Valtellina whites and a slow first hour by the water.
  • Afternoon. Check-in and unstructured time — wellness suite, the lakefront, or an optional gardens walk at the host property.
  • 7:30 pm. Sunset lakeside aperitivo, then private opening dinner in a historic ballroom held under exclusivity.

Day Two — Working & Experience

Productive by day, memorable by night.

  • 9:00 am. Three-hour leadership strategy session in a private room with controlled access and full AV.
  • 1:00 pm. Long Italian lunch on the property's lower terrace, light enough for the afternoon ahead.
  • 3:30 pm. Choreographed vintage Riva fleet cruise across the central basin, with private garden access at Villa del Balbianello arranged outside public hours.
  • 8:30 pm. Michelin-starred lakeside dinner accessed by boat; backup road transfer staged in parallel.

Day Three — Closing

Unhurried by design.

  • 7:30 am. Optional sunrise yoga on the lawn, lake swim with a safety boat, or a wellness treatment in the spa.
  • 10:00 am. Closing leadership session in the reserved room, coworking corners for one-to-ones.
  • 1:00 pm. Farewell lunch in the villa gardens; partners welcome to join from late morning.
  • From 3:30 pm. Coordinated private transfers to Malpensa and Linate, sequenced backwards from each flight.

Frequently Asked Questions

Planning a corporate retreat in Lake Como.

  • Lake Como is small enough to control and prestigious enough to set the tone of a meeting before the agenda begins. The central basin between Cernobbio, Bellagio and Tremezzo can be operated as a single, contained perimeter — guests move between the host property, a private dinner venue, and an off-site experience without the group ever dispersing. The grand hotels and historic villas on this stretch are accustomed to hosting board-level guests, which shapes everything from arrivals to private dining service.

  • Between 10 and 60 guests is where the destination performs at its best. Below 20, a single exclusive-use villa absorbs the entire programme. Between 20 and 40, a grand hotel can dedicate its meeting floor, gardens and boat fleet to one group. Between 40 and 60, a full property buy-out or sequenced two-property setup works well. Above 60 we typically recommend an alternative region rather than compromise the privacy that made the lake the right choice.

  • Late April through June and early September through mid-October are the two ideal windows: reliable weather, outdoor dining every evening, and full supplier availability. A Tuesday-to-Thursday or Sunday-to-Tuesday cadence produces calmer transfers and better venue access than a Friday-to-Sunday programme. November through March is a serious option for board retreats and focused strategy offsites where the conversation belongs indoors.

  • Malpensa is 50–70 minutes by private transfer; Linate and Bergamo are within 90 minutes. Each guest is met airside by a named driver carrying a discreet placard with the project name rather than the company. For senior principals on tight schedules, helicopter transfers reduce the journey to roughly 20 minutes, with a chauffeured road backup staged in parallel. Return departures are sequenced backwards from each flight with a built-in buffer for the Milan ring road.

  • Discretion is operational, not theatrical. Bookings are held under a project name. Guest lists, driver manifests and seating plans are circulated only to staff who require them. Front-of-house teams are briefed on which names are public and which are not. Private meeting rooms are secured with controlled access, AV is swept the day before the session, and boat operators and off-site venues sign confidentiality undertakings. None of this is visible to guests — which is the point.

  • For peak windows (May, June, September, early October), confirm destination and venue 9–12 months ahead. The most sought-after exclusive-use villas are typically reserved 12–18 months out. Shoulder-season programmes are usually deliverable in 4–6 months. Early engagement allows us to negotiate exclusivity, secure Michelin chefs for villa dinners, and design the agenda around the venue rather than the other way around.

  • Destination strategy, venue selection and contracting, every supplier in the supply chain, the operational run sheet, on-site delivery, and all contingency planning. The client owns the agenda content and the commercial decisions. Everything else is ours to manage. By the time the group lands in Milan, the role of the internal organiser is to participate in the retreat, not to produce it.
