Why the Dolomites

The destination for retreats where the conversation has to go deeper.

The Dolomites are the destination companies choose when the retreat is genuinely about people rather than performance — leadership integrations after a difficult year, founder offsites that need real reflection, strategy meetings where the agenda calls for slower thinking. The combination of altitude, light, silence and physical exertion produces a quality of conversation that lake and coastal destinations cannot reliably create.

Operationally, the region is tighter and more specialist than Tuscany or Lake Como. The serious inventory sits in a small handful of valleys — Cortina d'Ampezzo, Alta Badia, the Val Gardena, San Cassiano — each with its own character. The hotels and exclusive-use chalets at the top of the market operate at the standard of the best Swiss resorts, with the warmer hospitality culture that distinguishes the Italian Alps.

The Dolomites work for groups of ten to fifty where the cohesion of the cohort matters as much as the agenda itself, and where the company is willing to use the mountain as part of the programme rather than as a postcard.

Our Approach

Why companies choose The Italian Chapter.

Dolomiti programmes are won on weather, logistics and the quality of the mountain partners on the ground. Generic alpine planning produces generic results. We design and operate every programme end-to-end with the region's hoteliers, mountain guides, refuge operators and helicopter partners.

Hotel and chalet sourcing on the ground

We have stayed in every property we recommend. Each shortlist is built around the brief — exclusive use, meeting infrastructure, ski-in/ski-out, summer access — and contracted directly with the general manager.

Mountain guide and refuge network

Working relationships with senior IFMGA guides and the family-run refuges across the high valleys allow us to operate hikes, via ferrata, ski tours and refuge lunches that read as authentic, not staged.

Single point of contact

One project manager owns the brief, the run sheet and every supplier. The client's organiser participates fully in the programme.

Weather as a planned variable

Every outdoor moment is contracted with a parallel indoor backup. The decision to switch is made the night before by named owners, not improvised on the morning.

Helicopter and road sequencing

From Venice, Innsbruck or Milan: road transfers sequenced for mountain weather, with helicopter transfers and aerial sightseeing arranged through long-standing Italian operators when the cohort calls for it.

Programmes calibrated to fitness

Mountain programmes only work when every cohort member can participate at their own level. We build options into every outdoor moment so no one is forced into a level they cannot meet.

Where We Host

Alpine resorts and exclusive-use chalets.

Five-star alpine resorts. The grand alpine hotels in Cortina, Alta Badia and the Val Gardena operate at the standard of the best Swiss resorts: dedicated meeting floors, full spa and ski infrastructure, multiple restaurants and the experience of hosting senior corporate groups across both winter and summer seasons. We contract directly with the general managers.

Exclusive-use chalets. A small number of contemporary alpine chalets are available for full buy-out by a single group — typically 8 to 16 en-suite rooms, with on-site staff, kitchen brigade, spa and direct mountain access. The format produces the most cohesive Dolomites retreat for boards, executive committees and founder groups.

Mountain refuges and rifugi. Several family-run high-altitude refuges open for private lunches and dinners for corporate groups — reached by cable car, snowcat or guided hike. Used as off-site moments within a broader hotel-based programme.

Signature Experiences

Mountain experiences that earn their place in a working programme.

Dolomiti programmes succeed when the outdoor moments are genuinely well-chosen — not the longest hike or the steepest descent, but the ones that match the cohort and produce the right energy for the next session.

Guided ski mornings with private instructors. Small group ski programmes across the Sella Ronda with senior instructors — calibrated to the group's level, with private lunch at a refuge to follow.

Sunrise hikes and breakfast at altitude. An early ascent by cable car or snowcat to a high refuge, with breakfast served as the sun reaches the peaks. A short, well-paced moment that resets a leadership group ahead of a difficult day.

Refuge lunches reached by hike or snowcat. A long lunch at a family-run rifugio at altitude, reached on foot in summer or by snowcat in winter. The setting and the food carry the experience; the programme around it stays simple.

Helicopter sightseeing over the peaks. Twenty-minute scenic flights with senior Italian operators over the Marmolada, the Tre Cime di Lavaredo and the Sella massif — a strong opening or closing moment.

Cellar visits in nearby Alto Adige. A half-day to the Alto Adige wine valleys — visiting a single producer, with the winemaker leading the tasting and lunch — for groups whose programme has space for it.

Sample Programme

A four-day leadership offsite in Alta Badia.

Each Dolomites programme is built around the cohort and what the company wants the offsite to produce. The outline below illustrates a four-day winter leadership programme for twenty-five senior leaders.

Day One — Arrival

A composed welcome at altitude.

  • Midday. Wave-sequenced transfers from Venice and Innsbruck; named drivers and weather-equipped vehicles, snow chains carried.
  • Afternoon. Check-in and private ski / hiking gear fitting at the hotel by a dedicated outfitter, no queues, sized in the cohort's rooms.
  • 6:30 pm. Aperitivo with Alto Adige bubbles in the library lounge; an unstructured first evening by design.
  • 8:00 pm. Opening dinner in a private dining room — Ladin and South Tyrolean cuisine, Alto Adige wines.

Day Two — Mountain & Session

A morning on snow, an afternoon in session.

  • 9:00 am. Small-group ski programme across the Sella Ronda with private instructors; parallel guided snowshoe walk for non-skiers.
  • 1:00 pm. Alpine refugio lunch at altitude — the whole cohort converging around one long table at a family-run mountain hut.
  • 4:00 pm. Three-hour leadership session in a private hotel meeting room with full AV and controlled access.
  • 8:00 pm. Casual dinner in the village, booked under exclusivity at a serious mountain kitchen — deeply local, slow-food in spirit.

Day Three — Working day & celebration

The agenda's centre of gravity.

  • 9:00 am. Full-day strategy session on a private hotel floor with controlled access, dedicated AV and coworking breakouts.
  • 1:00 pm. Working lunch in a reserved dining room; short walk in the snow between sessions to reset.
  • 5:00 pm. Private cable car and snowcat ascent to a remote rifugio for a sunset aperitivo above the cloud line.
  • 8:00 pm. Celebration dinner at altitude — a Michelin-level chef brought to the refuge for the night, returning to the hotel by snowcat.

Day Four — Wellness & Closing

Slow morning, an unhurried departure.

  • 8:30 am. Guided forest-bathing walk in the Alpine larch woods with a certified guide, or full morning at a luxury mountain spa.
  • 11:00 am. Closing leadership conversation over coffee in the library, partners welcome to join from late morning.
  • 1:00 pm. Farewell long lunch in a private dining room, a final glass of Lagrein.
  • From 3:00 pm. Sequenced private transfers to Venice, Innsbruck and Verona, timed backwards from each flight with full weather buffer.

Frequently Asked Questions

Planning a corporate retreat in the Dolomites.

  • The combination of altitude, silence, physical exertion and the visual scale of the mountains changes how a group talks to each other. For leadership integrations, founder retreats and strategy programmes that need real reflection, this matters more than convenience or recognition. The Dolomites do something for cohort cohesion that lake and city destinations cannot reliably reproduce.

  • Ten to fifty guests is where the destination performs at its best. Below twenty, an exclusive-use chalet absorbs the whole programme. Twenty to forty works on a single grand resort with dedicated meeting infrastructure. Above fifty, the inventory thins quickly and we typically recommend an alternative destination rather than compromise.

  • Two windows. Winter (mid-January to mid-March) for ski-based programmes, with reliable snow across Cortina, Alta Badia and the Val Gardena. Summer (mid-June to mid-September) for hiking-based programmes, with long days, alpine meadows in bloom, and refuges fully open. April–May and October–November are operationally difficult for high-altitude programmes and we generally avoid them.

  • Venice Marco Polo is 2–2.5 hours by road to most Dolomites resorts; Innsbruck is 2 hours; Verona is 2.5–3. Each guest is met airside by a named driver in a weather-equipped vehicle. For senior principals on tight schedules, helicopter transfers from Venice are operable in good visibility, with a road backup staged in parallel.

  • No. The strongest Dolomites programmes build options into every outdoor moment so no one is forced into a level they cannot meet. A morning might offer a serious ski group, a beginner programme, a guided snowshoe walk and an unstructured spa option — all converging at the same refuge for lunch.

  • For winter peak (mid-January to early March) and summer peak (July to early September), confirm the property 9–12 months ahead. Exclusive-use chalets typically book 12–18 months out. Shoulder dates are usually deliverable in 4–6 months.
